Chess960 randomizes the back rank subject to placement constraints. Chess960x960 explores positions where the two sides use independent starting arrangements, creating asymmetric games from the outset.
Why evaluate the starting position?
An unfamiliar arrangement can be interesting without being balanced. The tool uses Stockfish to estimate the advantage in a starting position, so you can explore both the layout and its evaluation.
The combinatorial space comes from pairing the two sides’ Chess960 setups. A score near equality is an engine assessment at the selected depth, not a proof that the position is balanced.
The implemented tool
The interface generates a new position, displays it on a board, and evaluates it. You can change the search depth and copy its FEN for use in another chess tool.
Evaluation-range buttons search for positions in bands from a decisive Black advantage to a decisive White advantage. A Stop Search control halts the process.
Try it
Load the original browser app below. Check its Stockfish readiness indicator before searching. Higher depth takes more time; the README explains the controls and the sign convention for scores.
This is an exploration tool for starting positions. The article does not claim a tournament ruleset, a fairness guarantee, or new engine results.
